Become a Guardian Member
Members hold a legal right to help steer Wild Mountains, alongside a shared responsibility to be part of its life.
What it means
A real say in the future of the mountain
Guardian Members have a legal right to help steer the organisation, as well as a limited liability for the ongoing operation of Wild Mountains. Each member has a personal responsibility to be involved in the life of Wild Mountains: to make positive contributions and stay open to learning new skills.
As a limited liability company, Guardian Members carry a limited liability of $100 for the ongoing operation of Wild Mountains. Guardians must be at least 15 years old, and need to be nominated by an existing member. Before being approved, an application is ratified by the board of Wild Mountains.

For over 25 years, Wild Mountains has educated young people by immersing them in nature, sparking transformative shifts in how they see the world.
Guardian support lets us run an integrated programme of science, advocacy, education and on-the-ground landcare, safeguarding clean air, pristine water, flourishing habitats and a sustainable climate for the mountain and for all of us.

Becoming a member
The key rules
- The minimum number of members is five, with no upper limit.
- Members must be at least 15 years old.
- A new member must first be nominated by an existing member before being considered by the board.
- If Wild Mountains is wound up with debts owing, each member is obligated to contribute a maximum of $100.
The Guardian fee
$40 per year
Due and payable in advance every year on 31 March. Any subscription unpaid for three months after it is due results in membership being terminated, with a notice of default sent first.
How it works
The application process
A person must make a conscious decision to apply. Meeting the criteria alone does not make anyone a member. The directors have the final say, and an appeals process is available through a general meeting.
The person applies
The application must be in writing and accompanied by a nomination from an existing member.
Directors decide
At the next directors’ meeting, the board decides to accept or reject the application after checking the eligibility requirements.
Added to the register
If accepted, the person’s details are entered in the register of members within 14 days. The date of entry is the date the person becomes a member.
Written notice and fee
The board writes to the applicant within 14 days to confirm the outcome. The applicant then pays the annual subscription fee.

Your voice, in full
Knowing your rights as a member puts you in a stronger position to play an active part in the future of Wild Mountains.
Request a general meeting
Ask the directors to call a general meeting, for example to raise a concern about governance or propose a change to the rule book. The request must be in writing and signed by 10 per cent of the membership.
Vote at meetings
Directors manage Wild Mountains, but it is the members who help decide its direction by voting at meetings. You also have the right to demand a poll, a formal counted vote, on a resolution put to a general meeting.
Propose a resolution
If you have an idea that will benefit Wild Mountains, you can put it to a general meeting. Give notice to the secretary well beforehand, with support from 10 per cent of the membership.
Remove directors
Members can put forward a resolution at a general meeting to remove a director. Notify the secretary at least 21 days before the meeting. Directors have a right of reply.
Access information
Ask questions about the management of Wild Mountains, inspect the Memorandum of Association, and request copies of the financial, directors’ and auditor’s reports, the internal governance rules, and the minutes of members’ meetings.
